In the October, you, the readers of Indian Newslink will decide who is the best candidate, with the experience, record of accomplishment and leadership skills to lead the move from several councils to one.
It is a decision that will shape of future.
I believe I am that candidate.
This is my first column for Indian Newslink (since my previous term as Mayor -2004 to 2007) and I want to concentrate on one of the most important issues confronting our new city: Security.
Crime destroys families, businesses, and could destroy our communities if we are not careful. Too often, we hear about home invasions, violent robberies of dairies and small liquor outlets in South Auckland.
Violent crime in Manukau is almost double that in central Auckland.
I do not want this replicated across the rest our region or these criminals coming through your window.
I have zero tolerance to all anti-social behaviour.
I believe we have the right to feel safe in our homes.
In the first week of my Mayoralty, I will meet with the relevant agencies including the Police Social Development and Justice Ministries and we will build a coalition with the powers to tackle the unacceptable levels of crime head-on.
I want a dedicated multi-agency taskforce, well resourced with skilled people and state of the art equipment, fighting to get on top of the gangs and their evil drug trade.
I met with taxi drivers from Auckland Co-Op Taxis recently.
It is not surprising that they were concerned about their safety and security.
They often face bashings and thefts while doing a service for our communities.
If I become Mayor, I will continue to listen to them on a regular basis.
I would rather see criminals locked up and the key simply thrown away.
But we must look at ways of stopping crime before it happens.
As a former Police Minister, I can work with the Government on this issue.
The Police and the Government have done a good job of cracking down on crime but much more is needed for us to really get on top of this epidemic.
As one city of 1.4 million people, we will have the strongest voice of influence ever.
I will lobby strongly for a ‘Super Police Force’ for our ‘Super City’. It would be a regional force, with a combined management structure to ensure the whole region is talking and working together.
Currently, the Police have major problems investigating crimes outside their Police district, even between Auckland Central and Manukau.
This cannot happen.
Criminals ignore these artificial boundaries and hence the Police should do so.
Crime will continue so long as we have so many young people without education and hope. We cannot stand by and have good people living in a climate of fear.
It is not okay that our Indian communities are often victims of senseless crime.
You deserve a safer Auckland and that will take strong decisive leadership from someone who would not take a backward step.
Under John Bank’s Mayoralty, you will get one.
John Banks is currently Mayor of Auckland City and a candidate for the post in the upcoming elections for Auckland Super City. The above article is exclusive to Indian Newslink. ©
