Scores of students of the Auckland based Sangeetha Bharathi Music School will participate in an annual music festival paying homage to one of the greatest composers of South India.
The School will commemorate ‘Annamaya Padahela,’ (Tribute to Annamacharya) at the Mt Roskill Intermediate School Hall (Denbigh Avenue) in Mt Roskill on May 5, 2012 at 630 pm.
Padma Govardhan, Principal of the School said that the forthcoming programme will feature Saint Annamacharya’s compositions on Goddess Alamelumanga (a form of Goddess Lakshmi).
“As announced last year, people can email their requests for songs to gmallela@yahoo.com on or before May 3, 2012,” she said.
Revered as ‘Annamayya,’ the 15th century (1408-1503) bard from Andhra Pradesh composed more than 32,000 Sankirtans and songs.
But no more than 12,000 such compositions are available today to challenge Carnatic musicians and music enthusiasts.
It was a pity that his poetry and piety were forgotten for almost three centuries before they were revived and reinstated to their rightful place.
His compositions in praise of Lord Venkateswara (a form of Lord Vishnu), located in Tirupathi in Andhra Pradesh invoke pious and emotive appeal.
According to some, Annamayya was the human form of the Lord’s ‘Nandaka’ (sword).
He acquired the title of ‘Acharya’ (Great Saint) when he was converted to Vaishnavism at the age of eight.
The works of Sri Annamacharya have helped millions of people worldwide to realise the Power of the prayer and music.
