The Sri Lankan community in Auckland has initiated a project to mobilise financial resources to promote the activities of StarJam, a non-profit organisation involved in promoting the wellbeing of children with special needs.
An Organising Committee is putting together a Sri Lankan Food Fair on January 29 at the Panmure District School (located at 87 Mt Wellington Highway) in aid of the Project, simultaneously highlighting the country’s cuisine.
Project leader Nalin Wickremasinghe said the Fair would feature up to 10 stalls selling Sri Lankan food and beverages.
“Many members of the Sri Lankan community have agreed to support the Project by preparing food for the various stalls free of charge.
“An independent group has initiated this fundraising project,” he said.
Established seven years ago by Auckland couple Julie and Roy Bartlett, StarJam has been working with a vision to motivate disabled children to shine and gain self- confidence.
“The organisation provides them an opportunity to stand proudly in the performance spotlight,” a notification said.
“StarJam was initially set up for the audience, not for performers; they wanted wider community to see beyond disability. These performances made a difference in the lives of the children and motivated their parents as well.
Chief Executive Julie Bartlett said StarJam created opportunities for youngsters with disabilities to experience personal achievement.
“Our objective is also to enhance their empowerment, make new friends and become normal and independent young New Zealanders.,” she said.
