South African delicacy ‘Lamb Bunny Chow’ is the highlight of this week’s Home Chefs Special that is currently on show on the SevenzTV channel.’
Jason Govender demonstrates how to cook this dish, which was developed by people of Indian origin who settled down in South Africa.
Origin of the dish
According to another source, ‘Lamb Bunny Chow’ was created by Indian migrant workers using distinctly Indian flavours and spices. Some say that it is South African slang for Gujarati food. It was the staple lunch for workers in sugarcane plantations but is now widely consumed at restaurants and homes throughout the world.
Govender is a fifth-generation Indian from Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa. His passion for cooking is evident from the way he shares the recipe and takes us through the cooking process of this tasty dish.
The Recipe
Bunny Chow is a kind of bread bowl. Usually, a white bread loaf is taken, hollowed in the middle, and filled with a curry, which could be vegetarian or any type of meat.
Govender has used lamb and vegetables cooked with spices as a filling inside the bread. This filling along with its gravy seems quite appetising. The speciality of this dish is that the bread itself is used like a bowl or plate.
Supported by his wife Artemis, who hails from Iran and show hostess Bharati Sonu, this episode is the fifth in the weekly Home Chefs series launched by Sonu Kumar and Shoba Sonu.
The episode, carrying the full recipe and the method of making Lamb Bunny Chow, can be seen on www.sevenztv.co.nz, SevenzTV Facebook, YouTube and on all Indian Newslink platforms.
