The man who earned two Hollywood film industry awards for star composer A R Rahman will be in Auckland this month as a part of a world tour.
Sukhwinder Singh will belt out some of the most popular songs culled from Indian films in a concert that will account for 18 other artistes, flying to New Zealand for a show with promise.
Zoom Group, an Auckland based company is organising the ‘Jai Ho Sukhwinder Singh Concert’ at the Victory Convention Centre (also known as the Beaumont Centre) in Freemans Bay (98 Beaumont Street), Auckland.
The Group’s Directors Tony Singh, Baltej Bajwa, Gurbhej Randhawa and Harwinder Basra are upbeat about the forthcoming event.
Oscar & Grammy
“Sukhwinder Singh is one of the most popular singers of India, with admirers all over the world. His popularity reached greater heights with his song ‘Jai Ho!’ (tuned by A R Rahman for ‘Slumdog Millionaire),’ which won the Academy (Oscar) Award for the ‘Best Original Song’ and a Grammy Award for the ‘Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or other Visual Media’ in 2010.
“We are confident that the forthcoming concert will interest all Indian movie and music fans in New Zealand,” they said.
Jasleen Matharu, who is making waves in Indian films as a dancer and singer, will be another attraction at the concert.
Mr Singh said that an 18-member orchestra will accompany Sukhwinder during the world tour, which includes one show in Auckland.
Tickets for the show, priced at $80 (allotted seats in Zone A), $60 and $40 (unallocated seats in Zones B and C) are now on sale at a number of outlets.
Event Manager Dharmesh Parikh, Director of Reshab D Parish Productions, said that a few VIP seats are also available.
“We would do our best to make the forthcoming show the most memorable event ever held in New Zealand. Sukhwinder Singh is a big name in the music industry and he will live up to his reputation as a friendly and talented singer,” he said.
Accomplished Singer
Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Sukhwinder came under limelight when he was eight years old, rendering on stage a popular song ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ (from ‘Abhinetri’).
He joined the music director duo Laxmikant Pyarelal as an arranger and later began to sing their compositions.
Sukhwinder got his break in ‘Karma,’ in which he rendered a few lines for a song. However, his true talent emerged later, especially with ‘Chaiyya Chaiyaa,’ composed by A R Rahman and picturised on Shahrukh Khan for Mani Ratnam’ film ‘Dil Se.’ The song earned him the Best Male Playback Singer Award’ (Filmfare) in 1999.
He has a Punjabi album (‘Munda South Hall Da’), apart from many others to his credit. He has also sung in South Indian films.
Jasleen Matharu is a singer, actor, performer and a trained Bharata Natyam dancer. She is also adept in Hip-Hop, Salsa, Belly Dancing and Bollywood Jhatkas and is a brown belt in kickboxing.
