‘Then India Sanmarga Ikya (New Zealand) Sangam (popularly known as NZ Sangam) honoured Indo-Fijian statesman Jai Ram Reddy with its ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at a function held in Auckland recently.
TISI Sangam National President Salesh Mudaliar presented the Award on behalf of the members of the organisation.
The Fijian government conferred on Mr Reddy the title of ‘Companion of the Order of Fiji,’ the highest civilian honour of that country in 1998.
Inaugural Face
The NZ Sangam event, held at the Logan Campbell Centre on February 16, was its inaugural ‘Face of Sangam 2013.’
It recognised and rewarded a number of achievers in various fields, motivating the emerging talent within the community.
More than 450 people attended the event, which included music, dance and awards presentation ceremony, with a red carpet formal dinner.
Among the other prominent guests was Vilimaina Davu (a Fijian and New Zealand Netball player, who has represented both countries).
Guests said that ‘Face of Sangam 2013’ was the most spectacular event in the history of the New Zealand Sangam.
“We were captivated by the young talent,” they said.
Amreeta Gounder and Kaushik Nicker were crowned respectively Ms Sangam and Mr Sangam, in a tough competition.
They will represent the New Zealand Sangam as its ‘ambassadors’ during the year.
Soccer Carnival
The Annual Sangam Carnival held at Centre Park Sports Stadium in Mangere on February 16 and 17 was another Sangam event, bringing together people of Fijian and other ethnicities.
There were 13 TIV Sangam branches in the soccer competition and enthusiasts were treated to a fine display of skills and athleticism.
Hamilton TIV Sangam won the match, defeating Middlemore TIV Sangam.
The mixed netball competition was won by Waitakere TIM Sangam, edging out Middlemore TIM Sangam in the final.
