Issue 421 August 15, 2019
More than a billion people in India will mark the country’s 73rd Independence today, August 15, 2019 and the Diaspora in New Zealand would be no exception.
With a strong and powerful government at the centre, the Indian polity and economy have never been as strong since becoming a free Nation on August 15, 1947. Through tough times and rough political and economic weather, India has remained stable, winning the respect and accolades of countries around the world.
World Bank praise
A recent World Bank Report brought joy and satisfaction to economists and statesmen.
India is in a period of unprecedented opportunity, challenge and ambition in its development. Already the world’s third largest economy in purchasing parity terms, India aspires to better the lives of all its citizens and become a high-middle income country by 2030, well before the centenary of its Independence, the Report said.
“Long-term GDP growth has become more stable, diversified, and resilient. Over the next few years, India is expected to grow at well over 7% per year, with progress being buttressed by dynamic reforms in the macroeconomic, fiscal, tax and business environments.”
An Introspection
But no nation can improve unless its people, no less journalists and analysts, subject themselves to an honest introspection. In such a mood, we would discern the difference between what has been achieved and what could have been achieved; and the level of performance against the potential.
