A senior Rotarian is inviting eligible members of all communities to join the Rotary Movement and promote social and community welfare projects in New Zealand and overseas.
Reginald Nand, President of the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, Lynfield and Mt Roskill Inc has launched a Membership Drive to strengthen the membership of his Club.
But as a well-established national and international Movement, membership can be sought at any Club, subject to rules and regulations of Rotary International and the availability of membership in a specific club. But all members wear the Rotary Badge with pride and attend meetings held at various clubs across cities all over the world.
Serving diverse causes
“We focus our time, energy and efforts on service projects encompassing Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Water and Sanitation, Maternal and Child Health, Basic Education and Literacy; and Economic and Community Development,” Mr Nand said.
He said that ‘Rotary Foundation,’ is an international charity and that it is the second largest charity in the world supporting local communities as well international humanitarian work.
Established in 1905, Rotary is the world’s premier humanitarian service organisation.
It embraces a diverse, global network of communities, businesses and professional leaders who address relevant social causes to change lives and build goodwill and peace at home and abroad.
About Rotary Clubs
Mr Nand said that members form individual clubs which get together to form a District, in turn forming a Zone which eventually leads to the international framework.
“More than 1.2 million members are a part of over 35,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas,” he said.
The Rotary Movement began in New Zealand in 1921, and currently has about 7750 members enrolled in 267 clubs across the country. There are six Rotary Districts in New Zealand.
“We are in Zone 7B, comprising Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. The Rotary Club of Hillsborough, Lynfield and Mt Roskill, chartered in June 1954, is a part of District 9910. Our membership is open to all nationalities, gender, ages and background with a variety of membership types available to suit all needs. Our multicultural society offers Rotary the opportunity to thrive on the diversity around us to make our membership more inclusive,” Mr Nand said.
Members of the Rotary Movement believe that they have a shared responsibility to take action on the most persistent issues.
Promoting local communities
Mr Nand said that his Club is keen to do more engaging with the local communities.
“We can organise Events to raise funds and provide funds for local community initiatives and enrich the lives of others. We work with local businesses and share expertise to deliver community projects. We support local charities such as the Child Cancer Society, Blind Foundation, HeartKids, Multiple Sclerosis and other charities,” he said.
Mr Nand said that the Rotary Club of Hillsborough, Lynfield and Mt Roskill also works with schools to set up fundraising projects or organise educational programmes such as ‘Trees for Survival’ and Youth Leadership Course for young people in the 18-28 age group.
“We support life-changing projects by providing emergency aid to disaster-hit regions and run educational, health or sanitation projects in developing countries. We also undertake worthy community projects to make a difference,” he said.
Open to All
“As we pursue our Membership Drive, we open our doors anyone interested in joining our Club and share this rewarding Rotary experience. Please feel free to come along to our meetings to find out about our Club. Together we can do a lot more,” he said.
Mr Nand is a Rotary veteran of 40 years, having commenced his involvement in Fiji and thereafter working for the Rotary Movement in the Pacific Island countries, Australia and now in New Zealand.
“As a banker, I found Rotary offering exciting opportunities for community service,” he said.
