The residents and the team of Arvida Aria Park in Epsom Auckland came together to celebrate Diwali by making Laddu, Chivda and Bhuja for their neighbours to enjoy.
The retirement community for over-65s is known for its multicultural environment and saw residents from different backgrounds join together in the activity, exemplifying the community’s celebration of diversity and togetherness.
Resident Joanna Clyne enjoyed using her hands to press and shape the flour, sugar, and cardamom laddu mixture into balls.
“I had never heard of laddu. I found it quite easy to make and it does not take long to prepare. They taste good too,” she said.
Arvida Aria Park Village Manager Hyrum-Daniel Dennis said that the lounge area was filled with the aroma of fresh laddu, laughter, and shared stories of past Diwali celebrations. For many, it was a chance to learn about a new cultural experience and enjoy a few sweet and savoury treats.
He said that Diwali celebrations continue in the Epsom retirement community, which has more than 120 residents, with traditional dance performances and special Indian lunches planned for next week.
“Diwali is one of many cultural events we celebrate throughout the year in our community. It is about the language, people, food and coming together. Diwali happens to be one of the biggest events on our calendar,” Mr Dennis said.
