The Christchurch Earthquake has affected many of us.
I first visited the city the day after and was I was impressed by the spirit and resilience of the community in the face of disaster.
I continue to admire their strength as the long process of rebuilding begins.
The National Government is providing relief in a number of ways.
Last week we passed special legislation to help speed up the rebuilding process.
I know many Indian businesses have found it difficult to operate since the quake.
That is why businesses with fewer than 20 employees can access $350 wage subsidy per week for four weeks for each of their staff member. They can top up this sum if they are able to and it will be made effective from the date of the earthquake.
The Inland Revenue Department has set up a Disaster Response Helpline for people having difficulty in meeting their tax obligations.
The Department has been authorised to waive interest on late tax payments for Canterbury earthquake victims.
Of course, help has also been offered by many other areas. I am impressed with the support our Indian communities have extended, from raising money for relief funds to helping to co-ordinate recovery efforts on the ground.
With community spirit, determination, and the full support of the Indian community, we will continue to work alongside the people of Canterbury to rebuild their lives.
