The country’s largest family-owned real estate company has taken up the challenge of improving facilities at the Starship Hospital in Auckland.
Barfoot & Thompson (B&T), which began its engagement with the country’s premier child healthcare provider in 2003, has a self-assigned target of raising funds to install two ventilators and upgrade the garden area in the Child and Family Unit this year.
Last year, the Company raised $75,000 for purchase and installation of a Portable Ultrasound machine and challenged its staff at all branches to mobilise finances, resulting in a record amount in a record time.
Bollywood Programme
This year, B& T hopes to raise $200,000 through a number of programmes, one of which is ‘Bollywood Music and Masti Nite,’ being organised by the Company’s Manukau and Otahuhu branches at the Panmure Community Hall on June 22.
“Tickets priced at $20 include a dinner pack. Drinks will be sold but guests should present their ID for purchasing alcoholic beverages,” organiser Priya Shankar said.
The event will be held from 7 pm to 11 pm and there will be door prizes for lucky winners of a raffle, she added.
“Starship has been a part of our commitment to the community and our assistance to the charitable institution forms the cornerstone of the relationship that we have built over the past ten years. Our ‘Magic of Reading Programme’ puts 16,000 books in the hands of Starship patients each year,” a press notification said.
Guaranteed funding
According to the media statement, the Company provides guaranteed annual financial contribution to Starship and that since becoming a corporate partner in 2004, B&T has donated more than $1.3 million, funding vital equipment for the Heart Unit, Radiology Department and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.
“We have been sponsoring our ‘Friends of Starship’ events (including the ‘Starship Supernova Swing in 2009), providing support, including free auctioneering services at Starship’s fundraising events. In 2007, we appointed Rugby hero Keven Mealamu as ‘Ambassador to Starship.’ He helped in creating a book for the B&T Magic of Reading Programme,” the notification said.
A keen amateur artist, Kevin has illustrated five storybooks for the winner of the ‘Young Authors’ Challenge, a competition for Auckland and Northland Schools’, with the proceeds of the book sales coming to Starship.
Silver Fern Anna Harrison became a B&T Ambassador in 2010.
A trained physiotherapist, she assists the Occupational Therapy team at Starship in motivating children with their recovery through her regular visits to the hospital.
