Young West Aucklander Karamvir Talwar is a source of pride to his parents (Gurdeep and Rupandeep Talwar), immediate family, friends and the communities around them as the Auckland Varsity student was among the 17 recipients of the New Zealand Prime Minister’s Scholars 2024.
Earlier this year, he spent 42 days in India, predominantly in Mumbai, the country’s commercial capital and was understandably amazed at the City’s fast pace and the coexistence of the very rich and otherwise.
Self-Discovery and Cultural Enlightenment
For Karamvir, the coveted Scholarship was an odyssey of self-discovery and cultural enlightenment. Securing the opportunity to intern at a distinguished Law Chamber in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, he embarked on a journey that not only broadened his intellectual horizons but also deepened his appreciation for resource-efficient methods of community service.
Karamvir was six years old when he migrated to New Zealand from his native Lucknow. Growing up in Auckland with social, cultural and domestic values instilled, he is now in the final throes of his Conjoint Degree in Law and Arts at the University of Auckland.

His time in India has proved to be far more than an academic pursuit; it has served as a profound immersion into a society where ingenuity is woven into the very fabric of daily life.
“In India, I witnessed how initiatives are executed with remarkable efficiency, even in the absence of extensive resources. Creativity and pragmatism are indispensable here, ensuring every individual’s needs are met with dignity,” he said.
Mumbai’s rich colonial heritage further stimulated Karamvir’s intellectual curiosity. Observing the City’s architectural grandeur juxtaposed with the vibrant pulse of modern India, he remarked on history’s enduring influence upon contemporary life.
“Coming from New Zealand, it has been fascinating to see how colonial legacies continue to shape urban landscapes and social dynamics. Yet, the greatest lesson I have gleaned from this experience is the unparalleled humility and resilience displayed by the people. Despite possessing little in material wealth, they radiate an extraordinary sense of joy and contentment,” he said.
