The Otara Sports Awards celebrates and honours the sporting achievements of sports people including athletes, coaches and administrators in Otara, Auckland.
When the Awards were launched in 2017, the Otara Barbell Weightlifting Club were named Team of the Year before scooping up the Supreme Award and four New Zealand sporting greats – Rugby League heroes Ruben Wiki, Tawera Nikau, NZ Sevens legend Eric Rush and Silver Ferns great Temepara Bailey (nee George) – were inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board Chairperson Lotu Fuli said this year’s event will build on the success of the inaugural Otara Sports Awards.
Celebrating excellence
“The Otara Sports Awards is a celebration of the sporting excellence of local sports people. After last year’s hugely successful event, we are excited to open nominations so that our community can highlight our sporting heroes that are shining locally and even on the national stage,” she said.
“We will also be inducting new members of the Hall of Fame this year. This category honours the success of an athlete who has exceled at the highest level of their sporting code and also recognises their contribution to Otara and Aotearoa,” Ms Fuli said.
This year’s Otara Sports Awards will be held at Kia Aroha College in Clover Park and features 14 categories including Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and a Supreme Winner.

Service to Sport; Sports Administrator Award; Official of the Year; Coach of the Year; Junior Team of the Year; Junior Sportswoman of the Year; Junior Sportsman of the Year; Masters Athlete of the Year; Uniquely Abled Award; Team of the Year; Sportswoman of the Year;
Sportsman of the Year; Supreme Award; Hall of Fame: Lifetime Achievement Award
Nominations close on Sunday, November 4, 2018 at 7 pm. Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony due to be held at 6 pm on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Kia Aroha College.
