Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust and Bharatiya Mandir have jointly established a ‘Drop in Centre’ at 258, Balmoral Road, Sandringham, which was opened on July 20, 2018.
The Centre will be open from 9 am to 5 pm every Wednesday and Friday.
“Anyone can take read the newspapers, books, magazines, surf the internet, play games, take part in activities, or just sit back, have a chat with friends or even have a snooze. Regular activities for those who want to learn new skills or revive their skills will be made available during different parts of the day,” Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust General Manager Nilima Venkat said at the inaugural event.
Mt Roskill Elected and List Members of Parliament, respectively Michael Wood (Labour) and Dr Parmjeet Parmar and Roshan Nauhria of Bharatiya Mandir were among the Guests of Honour at the Programme.
First of its kind
The Drop in Centre is the first of its kind where seniors can meet like-minded people, and socialise or relax in a safe and central location.
Activities for seniors will be provided and managed by Shanti Niwas.
A Shanti Niwas Social worker will be available for seniors at the Centre once a week.
Ms Venkat said that Shanti Niwas has been in the forefront of providing services to the elders of the South Asian community since 1994.

“Some of our services include Auckland-wide Positive Ageing Day Programmes, Elder Abuse Response Service (contracted by the Ministry of Social Development), Emergency Home, Dosti Visiting Services, Women’s Prison Visiting Service and other Aged Care Support,” she said.
About Bharatiya Mandir
Educational and recreational activities for the youth and children will be provided in association with organisations led by Bharatiya Mandir (Indian Temple) Inc.
For the past 25 years, the Temple has been providing services to children and youth of the Indian Community. Dance, Music, Yoga, Arts & Crafts and Language classes are conducted regularly.
