Model of the Fortnight

Cleanest thoughts bring happiness and warmth

Life is meant to be experienced King (perhaps Queen) Size and every moment should be enjoyed. Waiting for happiness will push it farther, says Karuna Ashok Thawani, our Model of the Fortnight.

Born in India on Christmas Day in 1996, she belongs to a family in which love and trust are the guiding principles. She regards her parents (Sonia and Ashok) as the pillar of strength and elder sister Jharna as the source of inspiration.

Law & Psychology

Arriving in New Zealand in 2003, Karuna is currently a student at the University of Auckland studying Law and Psychology, hoping to become a lawyer and neuropsychologist.

“I hope to work as a lawyer fighting for the Crown. My grandfather was a lawyer and I hope to follow his footsteps. My psychology degree is a way of giving back what I gained to the community. I wish to work in medical camps for the needy in developing countries,” she said.

Karuna is a part-time employee at Westpac and she recently joined Radio Tarana as a programme presenter.

“I love what I do and I find it very fulfilling. I get to learn new things at work, which I find very exciting.  I also get a lot of pleasure in dancing and skydiving,” she said.

Karuna said that her mission in life is to be happy, learning every step of the way to find happiness in what she does.

Warming experience

She described Miss Indianz as a ‘really warming experience.’

“That platform was a beautiful way to learn about myself. Radio Tarana, though a recent venture, has already given me a lot. It brings me joy knowing that many people appreciate what I do. I enjoy performing in cultural and community events. I also teach and choreograph dance performances,” she said.

It is often said that ambition motivates a person to do his or her best in every endeavour and chase excellence. Teenagers like Karuna could well personify that statement.
