Migrant worker dies of multiorgan failure

A migrant worker who suddenly took ill. died of multiple organ failure at Auckland City Hospital on Wednesday, May 29, 2019.

He lost his battle for life at the Cardio-Thoracic and Vascular Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital where he was admitted on Friday, May 25, 2019.

Twenty-six-year-old Akhilesh Prakash Kadam was reported to have suddenly developed a respiratory problem which required emergency intervention and mechanical life support and intensive care treatment.

He is reported to have suffered multiorgan failure including lungs, kidneys and heart and his condition was initially reported very critical.

He was employed at the Auckland International Airport Office of the Compass Group.

Life-supporting systems

The Company’s Lounge Manager Carlos Delgado said that Akhilesh was fully dependent on machines and ICU support.

“It was difficult to predict how long Akhilesh would be in the Hospital or be treated within ICU,” he said.

Mr Delgado said that he and his Company were working with Immigration New Zealand and Indian High Commission to speed up the procedures for the arrival of Akhilesh’s father from his native Mumbai. He arrived on Thursday, May 30, 2019, a day after his son died.

Akhilesh, who is not married, arrived in New Zealand in 2017 to pursue a Level 8 course in Mechanical Engineering at AIT University. Following the completion of the course last year, he joined the Compass Group.

“We are extremely sorry that Akhilesh is no more. He did not have a medical history prior to his arrival in New Zealand. He was a very pleasant young man. We were all hoping that he would recover but we are not fortunate,” Mr Delgado said.
