National MP for Mount Roskill, Dr Carlos Cheung, has today lodged a Members’ Bill to guarantee resource consent for at least 15 concerts per year at major stadiums, including Eden Park.

My Bill amends the Resource Management Act 1991 to guarantee stadiums with a capacity of at least 25,000 fans can host no less than 15 concerts per year. This includes Eden Park, Mt Smart, Sky Stadium, One NZ Stadium and Forsyth Barr Stadium.

Eden Park has publicly stated: the only reason we missed out on Taylor Swift earlier this year was because of its resource consent restrictions. The economic loss has been estimated at $70 million.

My Bill will more than double Eden Park’s existing resource consent for six concerts per year to 15. This means more big names performing.

There is no doubt more concerts at Eden Park would be a big boost for both tourism and economic activity, especially at a time when Auckland really needs it.

The number of concerts stadiums have resource consent to host per year is determined by the relevant council in their Regional or District Plan.
