Massey offers options to quake victims

Massey University Vice-Chancellor Steve Maharey has announced a number of initiatives to help students affected by the Earthquake in Christchurch continue their tertiary education.

As well as extending the last date for enrolment (which ended on March 14), the University’s Albany (North Shore City), Manawatu (Palmerston North) and Wellington Campuses would offer a wide range of options, including distance learning courses and programmes, he said.

“We will provide academic and personal support to Canterbury students and treat their needs on priority. They must know that the New Zealand University system has the capacity to meet all their needs,” he said.

Mr Maharey said it was important that the international community was informed appropriately that New Zealand is able to provide a world-class university education even on the face of a crisis like the Earthquake.

“Like all New Zealand universities, Massey has worked closely in support of the efforts that have followed (the February 22) Earthquake. We are providing support in the form of staff on the ground, expertise, fundraising and now, we are offering specific additional options for affected students to ensure that they are able to commence and complete their studies,” he said.

Mr Maharey advised students to be aware of the initiatives of the Christchurch based Lincoln and Canterbury Universities to provide full programmes of study this year.

“We encourage students to follow the advice given by their University. Massey has offered to provide students with emergency placements, should they so desire during the interim period.

“If students have made a ‘fully-informed decision’ to transfer their enrolment, Massey will consider their application under the ‘late enrolment provisions.’ We wish to support students in every which way possible,” he said.
