Manukau Indians join World Yoga Day

Staff Reporter –

Millions of people will forget their political, religious and social affiliation and take the yogic stance on Sunday, June 21, 2015 to become active participants in the ‘World Yoga Day.’

What has now become a global wave began with the India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, imploring world leaders at the Annual UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014 to dedicate one day in the year to Yoga, which he said, was ‘India’s Gift to the world.’

The UN adopted a resolution on December 11, 2014 designating June 21 as the ‘World Yoga Day,’ known as ‘Summer Solstice,’ the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Manukau Indian Association (MIA) has joined hands with Yogathon New Zealand and Art of Living in organising a ‘massive Yoga session’ on June 21 at the Vodafone Events Centre (770 Great South Road, Manukau).

MIA Executive Committee Member Munish Bhatt said that the session, free for all, will commence at 8 am.

Swaminarayan Hindu Temple (New Zealand chapter of the International Swaminarayan Satsang Organisation), Art of Living New Zealand and scores of others have joined a growing list of community and religious groupings to mark the World Yoga Day.

“It does not matter if you are a serious yogi or a newbie or someone who has never done yoga. We want you at the Vodafone Centre on 21 June and in huge numbers. Yoga teachers will demonstrate the basics of yoga and this is a good opportunity to try this exercise if you have never done it before. Come and try it out,” he said.
