In a significant blow to organised crime, a multi-agency operation, codenamed Operation Yellowstone, has culminated in the seizure of substantial assets, cash, and a firearm. Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Fischer from the Central Asset Recovery Unit disclosed that the operation has made significant headway in dismantling criminal networks.
Hastings Arrest
The operation, which is part of a larger National Organised Crime initiative, saw the arrest of a 37-year-old man in Hastings last week. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, is slated to appear in the Manukau District Court on Friday, March 22, 2024, facing an array of drug-related charges.
The arrested individual faces a litany of charges, including possession of methamphetamine for supply, supplying methamphetamine, offering to supply methamphetamine, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Additionally, he is scheduled to appear in the Tauranga District Court on May 9, 2024, facing charges related to unlawful possession of a restricted weapon.
The operation
Last week, police executed two search warrants at properties in Hastings and Tauranga, unearthing a cache of illicit goods. Among the seized items were a firearm, cash, and various assets. Notably, two houses, $80,000 in cash, and five motor vehicles, including a Harley Davidson Motorcycle and a Mazda BT-50, were confiscated under the auspices of the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act.
Detective Senior Sergeant Fischer emphasised the significance of asset forfeiture in combating organised crime. He remarked, “Stripping assets derived through drug dealing activity strikes at the heart of what organised crime figures wish to achieve. Seizing their riches created by causing harm and distress in the community not only denies them the satisfaction of enjoying those assets, but it also helps provide some restitution for the damage caused to the community.”
The operation underscores law enforcement’s concerted efforts to disrupt criminal networks and stem the flow of illicit substances within communities. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice and the dismantling of criminal enterprises.
