Language body elects new officials

Members of the Auckland based Urdu Hindi Association of New Zealand elected Nafis Akhtar to the post of President at their Annual General Meeting held recently.

Among the others elected to various posts were Roopa Sachdev, Dr M M Baig Taimoori (Vice-Presidents), Syed Mujeeb (Secretary General), Tahseen Sultana (Treasurer), Patrick Bennett (Events Coordinator) and Neelam Choudary (Women’s Affairs).

Dr S D Mathur, M Maqbool Ahmed, Tauqir Khan, Rajesh Maharaj and V Giri were elected to the Advisory Board as members.

Among those elected to the Executive Committee were Dr Priya Punjabi, Mohammad Imran, Mazhar Memon, Ghouse Majeed, Saima Siddiqui, Suman Kapoor, Siraj Hashmi and M A Haq.

The Meeting also elected National MP Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi as Patron.

Mr Akhtar said that the Association will strive to establish a Library, continue language classes and publish an annual magazine for Ghazal and Mushaira.
