Lautoka lawyer and former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart Aman Ravindra Singh has been appointed to lead the Fiji Labour Party (FLP) into the 2018 General Elections.
Mahendra Chaudhry remains the Party Leader despite not contesting in the upcoming election due to his ineligibility status.
The announcement followed the FLP Council meeting at the Trans-International Hotel, in Nadi on Saturday, March 10, 2018.
About 40 Branch Representatives from various districts attended the Meeting.
Mr Singh said that his Party would contest all the 51 seats.
“Leaving personalities aside, we need to do what is right, what is more important, and the issues that our Nation and people are facing… which are pressing issues,” he said.
Party Manifesto
Mr Singh said that his Party’s Election Manifesto will offer practical and durable solutions.
“We strongly believe that when the policies are imposed, it will be workable. As far as FLP is concerned, we offer alternatives and policies to the people of Fiji … which are workable, tried and tested. Once again, given the opportunity, these will benefit the whole Nation,” he said.
Mr Chaudhry said that the FLP Council discussed issues related to the upcoming elections, which were main subjects of the agenda.
“I remain as the Party Leader and we have assigned the responsibility to the conduct the General Election for the Party to Aman Ravindra Singh who will lead FLP into the 2018 General elections,” he said.
He said that the Party took decisions to comply with its Constitution in respect of selection of candidates and determining of the Election Levy.
“We discussed our Campaign Strategy, financing the Campaign and candidates in terms of gender balance and racial mix. We also discussed Party Leadership which has been ongoing for some time with the media,” Mr Chaudhry said.
Labour candidates
He said that his Party was in no rush to announce its candidates.
“The Election Writ has not been issued, but we are planning to announce our first batch of candidates next week. We are still talking to potential candidates. There are some constraints along the way because of the employment of some candidates and hence they would not like to be identified just now. We await issue of the Writ and we need to know for certain when the General Election will be held,” Mr Chaudhry said.
However, FLP has confirmed that some seasoned politicians who had contested as MPs previously will contest in the forthcoming General Election.
“There are some past MPs who are in the team and others may have not been MPs but have good knowledge of the Government and how it works. Some of them are civil servants and administrators,” Mr Chaudhry said.
