It’s a dog’s day handling druggies

Man’s best friend has proved to be a great source of help in apprehending drug addicts, smugglers, murderers and other offenders, apart from being the finest and most loyal domestic animal.

Police dogs are perhaps the greatest asset to law enforcers and in recent years, they have been of increasing help to the New Zealand Police in its campaign against drug producers, pushers and consumers.

Police dogs therefore understandably became a subject of study for Anita Purdie, a student of Photography at Unitec.

Her aim in taking pictures of drug detection and police dogs was to increase awareness of how they spend their lives every day.

She hopes to complete her project shortly.

“I am interested in expressing through photographs as to how we view the environment and relate it to animals,” she said.

Loyal Partners

She found police dogs interesting, since they serve as workers, co-workers and loyal partners to their handlers.

The way police dog handlers treat their dogs, and the way the dogs respond to the handlers on duty creates a unique relationship, she said.

“Police dogs are important to the society and we owe them for their diligent work and vital roles they play within our communities,” Anita said.

Her project included snapshots of police dogs in action at drug detection drill and training on police grounds.

Her works and photography by other Unitec students were on display at the ‘Grandfest 2012’ held at the Mt Albert Campus on November 29, 2012, a detailed report on which appeared in our November 15, 2012 issue.

Unitec was the Sponsor of the ‘Best Medium-Sized Business’ Category of the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards 2012.
