Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) have responded to Government expectations to focus on improving outcomes for trainees with encouraging results.
The Government’s Educational Performance Indicators for the industry-training sector for 2011, released on October 31, 2012 showed that credit completions rose from 46% in 2009 to 71% in 2011; programme completions rose from 35% in 2009 to 69% in 2011.
“This is not unexpected and shows that the changes that ITOs have put into place have been successful,” Industry Training Federation Chief Executive Mark Oldershaw said.
“There are several reasons for the rise, including improved administrative practices and reporting systems by ITOs and government, and placing greater expectations on trainees and employers from the outset of the training agreement.
Mr Oldershaw said that ITOs had done well to embed literacy and numeracy learning into training resources.
“In some cases, mergers of ITOs provide for more support systems to better meet the needs of industries and trainees,” he said.
Mr Oldershaw said that ITOs were constantly looking at ways to improve the service they offered to New Zealand workers and workplaces.
“But we are confident that we are offering a quality service that delivers relevant skills and qualifications that support the New Zealand economy at a fraction of the cost of other parts of the tertiary education sector,” Mr Oldershaw said.
