It is perfectly fine to be imperfect

Every human being strives to become better day after day, simply because no human being is perfect. If you are imperfect; that makes you great, because despite all the imperfections, you succeed in becoming great,” says Denise Lim, our Model of the Fortnight.

She said that it is common for most people, especially young adults to pursue perfection even at the cost of their time, health and comfort.

She may appear philosophical but in reality, this teenager is a down-to-earth young woman with an indelible passion for people, their cultures and languages.

Denise is one of those rare children with a trinity of cultures and practices- Malaysian Chinese, Indian (born out of her father and mother respectively) and Kiwi, the land to which she migrated with her family seven years ago.

Denise is hopeful that as she graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in Teaching (Early Childhood Education), she would have the qualities of patience, love and care for children, making them free and happy.

“When I lived in Malaysia, I never thought about my Indian roots because my grandfather died before I was born. However, following our migration to New Zealand, I evinced large interest about India, its culture and people and realised that I was an integral part of each of these,” she said.

Linking to her Indian culture was among the main reasons for her entry to the Miss India Wellington Contest, held in the Capital on May 25, 2013.

As reported in our June 1, 2013 issue, Denise was declared the Second Runner-Up.

“It was a great and invaluable experience. I learnt more about myself as an Indian and met many people and earned several friends. I can now prove to people that I have ‘Indian blood’ in me!” Denise said.

She is passionate about travelling around the world, although Thailand is her favourite destination.

“I feel as though it is my second home,” she said.
