Despite the terrible weather in some parts of New Zealand, it was welcome news that road toll was lower than last Easter.
It was good to see drivers keeping left and abiding by the road rules. In heavy rain, it is important to increase your following distances and slow down.
Building better state highways and roads is a key priority for the National-led Government. I know this is important for businesses and workers, because you deserve faster and more reliable connections between our cities and markets.
National has highlighted seven roads of national significance, which we have prioritised for fast tracking, reducing congestion and improving safety.
Over 10 years, we are investing $10.7 billion to improve our state highways.
National also has an ambitious, five-year $7.5 billion infrastructure programme, which is helping our economy get back to strong and sustainable growth.
We are over two years into this now, and we have made great progress.
Rolling out ultra-fast broadband to 75% of New Zealand homes and businesses is an important priority to help our country compete with the world.
We also want to ensure that our rural communities stay connected.
National is spending $300 million to connect rural communities and schools to the high-speed broadband network.
Rebuilding critical infrastructure in Canterbury is an ongoing priority for National.
Finance Minister Bill English will deliver National’s third budget this month.
It will focus on building a platform for faster growth, getting back to surplus, repaying debt, increasing savings and investment, as well as rebuilding Christchurch.
It will be a balanced and responsible Budget for the times and will be about pressing on with our ambitious economic programme.
