We have just received information from Suman Kapoor, Oceania International Coordinator of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) that the first Chapter of the Organisation opened in Suva, Fiji exactly two months ago, on March 19, 2017.
Fiji’s Education, Heritage and Arts Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy was the Chief Guest at the event that was attended, among others, by India’s High Commissioner to Fiji Vishwas Sapkal, Curriculum Advisory Services Director Vimlesh Chand, and prominent businessman Vinod Patel, who received the Indian government civilian award of ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Samman’ on January 9, 2017 in Bengaluru.
GOPIO Suva President Ramesh Chand described the event as ‘historic for Fiji’ and said that the Organisation will concert efforts to preserve and promote Indian culture and Hindi language in Fiji.
He said that his Executive Committee comprises Shyamla Chand (Vice-President), Uttara Gurdayal (Secretary), Chandra Prakash Singh (Assistant Secretary) and Rohini Kumar (Treasurer).
