A woman’s awareness group enabled a number of persons to discuss issues openly and frankly at a meeting held last month.
Vani Elkinshin, a practicing counsellor outlined the trauma and stress that often affect women and advised them to take time out to address their emotional, spiritual, physical, mental and other concerns.
She was speaking on ‘Women Empowerment’ at a meeting organised by the Jaagriti Women’s Support Group of the Roopa Aur Aap Charitable Trust on February 9.
She emphasised the importance of asserting one’s self and not comparing with others in the family or the society.
Among the others who spoke at the meeting were officials from the Migrant Action Trust and South Auckland Family Violence Prevention Network.
They outlined their experiences in dealing with victims of family violence and other related problems.
Their speeches were followed by suggestions and advice from clinical psychologists, counsellors, social workers, healing experts and Art of Living teachers.
Trust Chairperson Roopa Suchdev said that it was important to protect the rights and safety of women in the community.
“We need to stand together and fight those perpetrating family violence. We should also learn to be ourselves, independent and strong,” she said.
