If the answer to the above questions is in the affirmative, you then have a date with Radio Tarana Fiji Festival scheduled to be held at the Telstra Clear Pacific Events Centre on February 26 and 27 from 12 pm to 9 pm.

Fiji’s own Comedy King John Mohammad, Dancing Queens Bijuriya and Hurricane Bibi and the sterling performers of ‘Trikuttu’ (which is a derivative of ‘Theru Kootu’ or ‘Street Dance’ in Tamil) will be among the highlights of the two-day event.

Radio Tarana Managing Director Robert Khan said that the event was gaining increasing popularity among Fijians and other ethnic groups.

“Our Fiji Festival is a family event, with a number of performers flown from Fiji to entertain New Zealanders. Apart from being a family event, the Festival also helps people to understand and appreciate our unique culture and cuisine,” he said.

According to Mr Khan, the forthcoming Festival will also feature a live band, the famous ‘Faag Competition’ and ‘Meke.’

Editor’s Note: According to Wikipedia, ‘Meke’ is a broad term in the Fijian language, primarily referring to all traditional style of dances. It is a cognate of the words ‘maka’ (Rotuman) and ‘mele’ (Hawaiian). ‘Meke’ is performed during celebrations and festivals. Traditionally the dances are performed by groups of men only or women only. However, foreign influence has brought about changes in recent years.

“Fiji cuisine will also be a part of the Festival, with a number of stall selling delicacies that are unique to the South Pacific Nation. These will include the ‘Bhuja’, ‘Chop Suey’ and ‘Chilli Chicken,’ along with Fiji Corn and Lovo,” he said.
