The importance of putting down family violence and make our homes safer was the subject of a workshop conducted by The Asian Network Inc (TANI) in Auckland last month.
The Family Violence Prevention Workshop, held on August 10 in collaboration with the Sikh Women Association based in Otahuhu emphasised the need to work together to create a supportive environment to tackle family violence in our communities.
This workshop was designed to reach the Punjabi community and was delivered in Punjabi.
It raised many concerns about family violence from the community perspective.
We were disheartened to hear from some participants that family violence has been accepted within their families as customary and as an inter-generational pattern.
The participants said that this attitude was wrong and that family violence was not part of any culture.
“We all need to wake up and act before it gets too late,” they said.
TANI plans to organise such workshops in different regions of Auckland in the coming months.
