Beauty pageants are not confined to women who are six feet tall and have a size zero figure; they are also for confident people and to those who know how to present themselves.”
That was a confident reply proffered by Asha Mamgain, our Model of the Fortnight, at the Miss Wellington Regional Contest organised by Reshab D Parikh Productions in the Capital on May 25 (Indian Newslink, June 1, 2013).
She won the Title, reinforcing the belief of organiser Dharmesh Parikh, who insists that his events “are not beauty pageants and competitions but celebration of talent.”
Asha also has fond memories of Mumbai, not just because it is the city of her birth but also because it is the home of the Hindi film industry.
“I have been a fan of Hindi films from my formative years. I also have great passion for modelling but I hope to become a cardiologist,” she said.
Youngsters like Asha migrating to New Zealand may not feel the cultural shock as they come from multicultural and multi-ethnic communities. She is however constantly mindful of her Gadwal heritage, which has its origin in Uttarakhand.
“I cherish the closeness I feel towards the people around me and the media exposure following the pageant. I attribute my success to the values, encouragement, love and support given by my family and friends. The journey since winning the title has given me priceless memories, which I will treasure forever,” Asha said.
She believes that the Miss Wellington suffix to her has given her greater confidence to face challenges and brought about a desirable change in her attitude towards life.
“I have evolved myself as more of a responsible person and opened myself socially more to the people. I know that I am not perfect but I am happy with the way I am and would not like to change,” she said.
