A long-cherished dream of New Zealand entrepreneur, Slumberzone Chief Executive Ranjay Sikka to establish a manufacturing presence in India hit a multiple jackpot at an event in New Delhi last fortnight.
As well as ensuring the presence of visiting New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon who had just concluded a bilateral meeting (declared as successful) with India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Commerce & Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, he had the eyes and ears of hundreds of investors, entrepreneurs at the event.
“We are happy to announce that our first mattress factory in India will be established in Hyderabad with an initial investment of $25 million (₹ 100 Crore). This initiative comes within the ambit of Mr Modi’s ‘Make In India Programme’ on the one hand and Mr Luxon’s vision of constructive engagement with India on the other. We are happy that our announcement comes after years of strategic thinking and planning,” he said.

Global Experience in India
Before leaving for India, Mr Sikka told Indian Newslink that the factory is expected to commence production in March 2026, employing about 250 skilled and semi-skilled workers.
“We will bring an international product experience to Indian consumers, which will redefine the sleep market in India and create an international presence for the Slumberzone brand. This move underscores the company’s dedication to providing premium sleep solutions and utilising India’s strong manufacturing capabilities to serve both domestic and international markets,” he said.
Mr Sikka said that the new facility will feature cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices to produce high-quality mattresses, fulfilling the vision of creating a comprehensive sleep ecosystem under the Slumberzone NZ brand.
“This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for premium sleep products in India while positioning the facility as a key export hub for international markets. By offering superior quality products, leveraging New Zealand’s reputation for innovation, and enhancing India’s capabilities, Slumberzone aims to compete with China’s dominance in the mattress industry,” he said.
Mr Sikka, who hails from Punjab, India, is well-versed in the Indian, New Zealand and Chinese markets, with about 30 years of experience in procurement, production, logistics and distribution.
In New Delhi, his nephew, Partner and Chief of Operations in India, Vidul Sikka, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Telangana Special Chief Secretary of the Industries & Commerce and Information Technology Jayesh Ranjan.
“At Slumberzone, we aim to challenge China’s dominance in the mattress industry by offering superior quality products and strengthening India’s position as a global export hub. In the first phase, Slumberzone will open exclusive outlets in major Indian metropolitan and Tier-1 cities, develop a robust franchise network, and strengthen its online presence. The second phase will focus on entering international markets, including North America, Australia, Europe, and the Middle East,” he said.

Luxon lauds move
At a joint meeting with his Business and Community delegations in New Delhi, Mr Luxon praised the move and emphasised the growing commercial ties between the two countries.
“It is encouraging to see New Zealand manufacturers like Slumberzone expanding into India. This initiative strengthens bilateral trade and supports the vision of ‘Made for India, Made in India.’ Our two governments are determined to conclude a Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement as soon as possible. We are also keen to enhance collaboration, broaden our trade relationship and contribute to the growth of both economies,” he said.
A Visionary Investor
At the helm of Slumberzone’s success is Ranjay Sikka, who migrated to New Zealand in 2003 with a dream to create something extraordinary.
Starting with a humble retail furniture store, he quickly identified an opportunity in the mattress industry and established Slumberzone in 2005. His relentless passion, innovative mindset, and commitment to quality have been instrumental in transforming Slumberzone into a household name in New Zealand.
“We started Super Furniture in Auckland to provide for our family. At the time, we never thought we would become a major manufacturer of mattresses and beds, but we were guided in that direction when we found it was not possible to get what we wanted in a suitable quality by importing product,” he said.

The Company’s Mission Statement: “Slumberzone will be the most sought after bed and mattress brand in New Zealand, manufacturing all its products in New Zealand from the very best materials. Our business will also be exporting premium products to offshore markets.”
The company’s success is rooted in its unwavering commitment to excellence and its ability to adapt to changing market dynamics. Over the years, Slumberzone has expanded its footprint across New Zealand, with more than 45 retail outlets nationwide. Slumberzone has grown to become New Zealand’s third-largest player in the mattress and sleep accessories segment.
The decision to enter the Indian market represents a natural progression in the company’s growth trajectory, driven by the rising demand for premium sleep products in the country.
Sikka’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to his resilience and vision. Beyond the mattress industry, he has diversified his business interests into kitchen manufacturing, housing development, and hospitality. His progressive outlook and belief in the power of positive energy have been the driving forces behind his success.
A Strategic Partnership
The Company’s Hyderabad Plant will focus on sustainability and innovation, reflecting Slumberzone’s commitment to creating a positive impact on the environment and society.
By incorporating advanced automation and eco-friendly practices, the facility aims to set new benchmarks in the mattress industry. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with global trends towards sustainable manufacturing.
The Hyderabad plant is more than just a manufacturing facility; it is a symbol of Slumberzone’s ambition and vision.
“You spend a third of your life sleeping on a mattress. You want to make sure that you spend your money wisely for that third to be spent sleeping comfortably. So how do you know that you are choosing a mattress that is right for you? There are so many materials, technologies, and styles which make you ready for a nap. You should consult us before purchasing a mattress,” he said.
Mr Sikka’s penchant for business manifests itself in many sectors, one of the most important of which is the food industry.
He is the proud owner of ‘Sward Amritsari,’ a restaurant located in Papakura, South Auckland.
Swad Amritsari resonates with the desire to bridge the gap between India and New Zealand.
“Our mission is simple: to bring the true essence of Amritsar’s street food culture and home-cooked delights to the vibrant city of Auckland. We understand that food is more than just sustenance; it is a connection to our roots, a comfort in a foreign land, and a way to share our culture with others. That is why we have poured our hearts into creating a menu that captures the soul of Amritsar’s culinary traditions,” he said.
“From a sated palate to peaceful slumber, life should be a dream that is worth living,” Mr Sikka said, underscoring the laconic philosophy of existence.
