When Dr Ratneesh Suri moved to New Zealand from India 11 years ago with her husband and three-year-old son, she had little idea she would not only complete a PhD, but also make a big transition to the corporate sector.
“The academia honed my analytical skills and taught me discipline; the corporate world rendered a perfect platform to put those into practice,” she says.
Dr Suri joined ANZ in 2008 as a Business Banking Analyst, moved to Finance and was quickly promoted to Senior Accountant.
Consumer Insights
Her next challenge was Customer Insights, where she could apply her analytical skills and financial knowledge to the bank’s internal data. Currently she is Team Leader, Customer Insight Managers.
“I am passionate about utilising data to create business insights, which helps us understand and serve customers better,” she says.
The journey has not always been easy, initially juggling family and study while also tutoring under-graduates.
It paid off when she graduated with awards for best papers, posters and presentations – and ‘Dr’ in front of her name.
The Real World
“I had to choose between a post-doctorate degree and a career with ANZ.
I chose ANZ because I wanted to see how the ‘real world’ operates.
“It is the best decision I have made. ANZ has given me great opportunities to grow and help others develop. The bank embraces flexible working and appreciates diversity.
“I have been able to focus on my career plus fulfil my responsibilities towards my family. I have also had excellent supervisors and managers; they have inspired and encouraged me.”
Her advice to others: “Give 100% to everything you pursue, strive for excellence and keep learning. Help others succeed and you will succeed.”
