Hindu scriptures and forms of worship create the feeling of oneness and promote unity and goodwill, which are indeed the meaning and purpose in life, an enlightened scholar and preacher has said.
Acharya Dr Laxman Dass Maharaj, an ascetic from Ayodhya in North Indian State of Uttar Pradesh was in Auckland last month to conduct discourses on Lord Vishnu and extol the virtues of Hinduism.
He also conducted nightly prayers including the ‘Parvachan Kumbh Mela,’ ‘Yajman Pooja’ and ‘Guru Pooja’ at the Manukau Indian Association Hall in Papatoetoe, South Auckland from September 10 to 14, 2012.
He told Indian Newslink that in addition to the discourses and poojas, he was keen to educate the young members of the society to be good, honest and useful citizens, serving their families and the country.
“I am extremely pleased to observe that our youngsters in New Zealand are keen to understand, assimilate and promote the Hindu tradition, heritage and values. We as elders must provide them opportunities to learn and be good and useful members of the community, society and the country. Our culture and heritage are the most valuable possessions, which we must cherish and hand over to the next generation,” he said.
Unifying language
Dr Dass said that his message to the people in every centre of his visit was to remain united, promote the Hindu faith and learn at least one Indian language.
“While English is spoken everywhere including schools, colleges, universities, workplaces and community gatherings, we should try to speak our language at least at home. Our Mother Tongue brings us pride and togetherness,” he said.
Ashram for peace
Dr Dass established the first Viswa Shanti Ashram in his hometown (Ayodhya). The Ashram is known for its serenity, piety and community service. His constant travel to various parts of the world has enabled the establishment of similar Ashrams in several countries.
In Auckland, the Ashram is located in Papatoetoe.
