The storm from Cyclone Gita has passed over the South Island and is now moving offshore to the south-east, allowing wind and rain to ease in many areas.
MetService meteorologist Peter Little said that the impact of the storm was slowly easing.
“Gita now lies East of Banks Peninsula and continues to move slowly away to the South-East, and hence we are seeing most of the rainfall now from south Canterbury down towards Otago,” he said.
Heavy Rains in Canterbury
MetService is predicting more heavy rain and strong winds in Canterbury, Westland and North Otago which could cause surface flooding and slips.
The heavy rain in North Otago and Dunedin is expected to last until midday.
There will also be strong winds in the central North Island, Wellington, Marlborough, the Kaikoura Coast, Buller, Westland and Canterbury.
Mr Little said it was still very windy in Wellington and Banks Peninsula but the winds on the remainder of the South Island was easing.
By the end of the day, all of the weather warnings would likely have been removed, and the clean-up can begin.
