An Auckland based music school will dedicate its annual musical tribute to a recently departed community leader and Carnatic Musician.
Sangeetha Bharathi School of Carnatic Music will conduct its ‘Swaranjali,’ on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Hay Park School Hall, 670 Richardson Road, Mt Roskill, Auckland, paying homage to renowned composers and musicians. The programme will also be a tribute to Appayya (Sam) Swaminathan, who passed away in Auckland on June 13, 2013 (see related story in Communitylink).
Entry to the event is open to all, with free admission.
School Principal Padma Govardhan said that ‘Swaranjali’ will be a musical salutation to the great Saint and composer Thyagaraja and his illustrious disciples.
“The guiding principles of life which lead to the realisation of the ideal and the final release of the human soul from the bondage of cycles (birth, old age and death), pronounced by sages and seers in the Vedas and Upanishads have been embodied in the melodious Krithis of Thyagaraja and his disciples, the late Venkatasubbaiah, Susarla Dakshinamurthy, Ramakrishnaiah Pantulu and the living Dr Balamurali Krishna. They have written many deep philosophical treatises and popularised the most profound philosophical truths embodied in these works through melodious keerthanas composed in Sanskrit and Telugu,” she said.
“This year’s Concert will also be in memory of Mr Swaminathan,” she added.
‘Swaranjali’ will feature the melodious voice of Vishnu Priya Mallela, one of our home-grown talents, supported by Dr Ashok Malur (Violin) and Dr Suresh Ramachandra (Mridangam).
