Many years ago, Producer-Director B R Chopra told me, “There are only two types of audience – one that sees movies for entertainment and the other that looks for harsh realities of life; everyone else would fall into one of these categories.”
Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan, which will debut on the big screen on December 24, promises to be a family entertainer, with music, dance, romance and thrills.
And with the hottest pair in Bollywood Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif leading the cast, the film will undoubtedly be a box office hit.
The Bollywood Hangama team described Tees Maar Khan as “a great criminal, who steals, cons and cheats all with such alarming audacity that even shame shies away from him!”
Akshay Kumar, who performs the title role, could well be Peter Sellers in After the Fox, a 1966 Italian comedy directed by Vittorio De Sica. Sellers makes good with $US3 million in gold bullion with his girl friend Britt England (who he later married) and lets himself into comedy of errors.
This is perhaps where the comparison would end.
Khan and his gang (‘Dollar’,’ Soda’ and ‘Burger’) keep the police the world over on their toes. For the best part, the gang is involved in petty thefts but gets away due either to their smartness or plain luck.
The story takes a twist when ‘Johri Brothers’ entice Khan to rob antiques worth Rs 500 crores (about $150 million) from a heavily guarded moving train. The con Khan readily agrees, perhaps with no intention of turning the booty over to them.
Will Khan and his merry gang, with some unwitting support from his wannabe-actress girlfriend Anya (Katrina Kaif) and a greedy Bollywood superstar be able to pull off the greatest heist in history?
You can find out when the movie is released in a theatre near you.
Post Script:
In the true innovative spirit of Bollywood, the music album of Tees Maar Khan was recently launched in a train which was bound from Mumbai to Lonavala.
Among the songs that would scale heights of popularity featuring on air radio stations and music programmes around the world would be Sheela ki Jawaani, picturised on Katrina.
Seated on the train, the rage of millions of fans said the song sequence would have been a challenge but ace choreographer Farah Khan made it easy with her expertise and methodical direction.
“I just followed her instructions. Farah’s assistant Geeta Kapoor also worked hard to check on the steps. I have done a bit of belly dancing in a new avatar. It will be a treat for the audience. We had a lot of fun shooting the song,” she said.
