Cancer takes its toll of Fijian children

Praneeta Prakash

Fifteen children under the age of twelve lost their battle to cancer last year.

According to ‘WOWS Kids Fiji,’ the youngest victim was a three-year-old girl and the oldest was an eleven-year-old boy.

‘WOWS Kids Fiji’ Team Leader Viola Lesi said that early detection can help protect a child from cancer.

“The faster we get them to the hospital, the faster they can be treated because cancer can be cured. But early detection is the key and it is not only for child cancer. Early detection is the best bet here in Fiji,” she said.

Board member Anne Belle Ali said that the organisation provides assistance to children with cancer and their families such as transportation, medication and overseas treatment.

“With the money that we collect, we support approximately 70 children every year and that costs us F$ 210,000 excluding our administration costs. Most times, we bear the administration cost, our board members volunteer whatever they can, and that is how difficult it gets to us to support these children,” she said.

Ms Ali said that the Organisation would like to increase the number of children served.

‘WOWS Kids Fiji’ marks its tenth anniversary this year and its members have vowed to continue their support.

It will soon begin its charity events to raise funds to assist children afflicted by cancer and help support their families.
