Business Awards underscore training excellence

The importance of training and career development of staff were among the main factors that led to a number of companies winning in the various categories of the Indian Newslink Indian Business Awards (IBA) since their inception in 2008.

As well as sound business plans and marketing strategies, the winning companies had demonstrated excellence in governance, with such governance incorporating staff motivation, team spirit and opportunities for their progress.

Magsons Hardware Limited, East Tamaki Health Care and Global Financial Services, which won the Supreme Business Award of the Year respectively in 2008, 2009 and 2010 had impressed the judges with their quality training programmes, most of which were specially designed in-house.

The Panel of Judges, which is independent of this newspaper, rated Magsons Hardware as “a very successful business with a strong focus on quality and innovation.

“Managing Director Vinod Kumar and Magsons believe in their staff and their commitment. They promote from within and have a staff apprentice programme, with training to national standards of excellence,” Convenor of the Panel Chad Wilkie said.

The judges commended East Tamaki Health Care, which won a number of individual awards as well in 2008 and 2009, for its vision and mission.

“The ability of this company to focus completely on its customers’ requirements, with a business model which can link the business margins required by the owners without compromising the outcome expected by the clinical professionals will ensure that company will continue to grow successfully,” they said in selecting the Company for the top award last year.

They found Global Financial Services, the overall winner of IBA 2010 for its deep understanding of the needs of customers.

“The Company’s recruitment policies, staff development and participation were recognised as key drivers for business success, and technology has been employed strategically to develop excellent systems,” they said.

Auckland bsed Xlerate Technologies Limited, which won the Best Innovation Business Award in 2008 and the Best Marketing Excellence Award this year, was also recognised for its recruitment, staff motivation and career development policy and strategy.

The Company integrates wireless communications, location-based technologies, GIS mapping, satellite imagery, hosted software applications, and transaction processing across any size of organisation.

It has a global presence through strategic partnerships in Dubai, Mumbai and the US and has consistently provided team spirit among its staff.

The judges commented upon Xlerate’s employment of graduate engineers for R&D, and product innovation running at 15% per month.

Nando’s New Zealand, the franchisor for the Nando’s Brand in New Zealand, won the Best Restaurant of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009.

The Company has registered rapid growth since its inception in 2000 in New Zealand and accounts for 28 stories throughout the country.

The judges were impressed by the management team’s enthusiasm and commitment to expanding Nando’s culture in New Zealand, and by the rate of growth in revenues and profits over the last three years.

Chiropractic & Sport Takanini Limited, which earned the Best Sustainable Business Award in 2009, was outstanding for its team culture and commitment to the local community and children.

“Fresh ideas and innovative thinking in community support is a strong indication of continued business sustainability,” Mr Wilkie said.

Joanne Godinho, who won the Best Businesswoman of the Year Award this year, was described as “A woman who quietly goes about providing the clear leadership required in developing staff and growing a good business.

“Joanne is passionate about providing great service to her clients and works hard to provide what the customers require. This has resulted in exceptional customer loyalty and on busy days, customer numbers are extraordinary,” the judges said.
