Member of the New Zealand Brahman Samaj marked Holi, the Festival of Colours last month with a touch of piety and sympathy for the victims of the Christchurch Earthquake.
A large number of them, accompanied by their families and friends, were at Cromwell Park (One Tree Hill) in Central Auckland.
The event included a ‘Kavi Sammelan’ (Gathering of Poets) in which people of varied ethnicities participated to raise funds for the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund. Among them was Dr Devraj Sharma, a retired Delhi University Hindi Professor.
President Suresh Sharma said that the Samaj has registered steady growth since its establishment last year.
“The Charities Commission of New Zealand has accorded us the status of Charitable Society. As well as helping charitable causes, the Samaj aims to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of Hinduism. The Vedas are the primary source of knowledge for Brahmin practices,” he said.
Mr Sharma said that the Samaj will help the younger members of the community to learn and understand the Vedic culture.
“Peaceful co-existence, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness are the hallmarks of a Brahman,” he said.
