Family welfare, community participation and social values will be the theme of an event scheduled to be held at the Papakura Marae on August 24.
The event, due to be held from 10 am to 2 pm, will be observed as ‘Gamble Free Day,’ highlighting the problems perpetrated by gambling, destroying in the process family life and community harmony.
Problem Gambling Health Promoters Collective, Papakura Marae, the Safer Aotearoa Family Violence Prevention Network (SAFVPN), and Choice Not Chance are promoting the event.
“The objective is to foster open discussion on some of the serious social issues that impact on our whanau and communities,” Nelson Wahanui, Problem Gambling Foundation Health Promoter said.
He said that one in six New Zealanders say that a member of their family has gone without something they needed or a bill has gone unpaid because of gambling.
SAFVPN Network Manager, Raewyn Bhana said that the forthcoming programme presented a great opportunity for the community to find ways and means of countering the menace of gambling.
“We encourage people to come to the Marae, support our whanau and strive towards family wellbeing,” she said.
