John Morahan (Men’s Singles), Tegan Weston (Women’s Singles), Ajesh Jose and Martin (Men’s Doubles), Thomas Carrington Wilson and Christina Robb (Women’s Doubles), Tegan Weston and Wasim Taj (Mixed Doubles) were among the prominent winners at the Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury Tournament held last fortnight.
The Tournament, fifth, in an annual Open series, was held on June 11 and June 12, 2021. Featuring about 90 players from various ethnic communities including Europeans, Asians and Kiwis, it was a personification of unity, involving diverse communities.
The Diverse format
The Tournament was held in various categories, with singles and doubles taking place in ten events. The format of the Tournament was Round Robin, followed by semi-final knock out, designed to allow a fair chance for all participants to play games with a mix of other players.
The Tournament witnessed some of the best performances from men, women, boys and girls. The doubles event was unique as it featured a combination of men’s, women’s, juniors and mixed doubles.
Women had a chance to compete with men and similarly junior players had a chance to compete with seniors. Based on performance, the best players were awarded as per the standard category. About 45 awards were presented in total.
Brightening prospects
I thank all the players who participated in the Tournament, which not only brought the best performance from each player but also helped to determine their skills.
It was great to see participation from the wider community and I am optimistic that the next event will feature more than 100 players.
