Christmas celebrations, competition to promote sports, social and community wellbeing were all part of the Srinivasa Ramanujan Memorial Badminton Tournament held in Christchurch on December 20, 2020.
Organised by Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury Incorporated in memory of one of the foremost mathematicians of our times, the Tournament was open to everyone, irrespective of their ethnicity, nationality of level of proficiency in the game.
Multiethnic, open to all
With 48 players and 24 doubles, the Tournament ensured that all participants at least got nine games each in the round-robin and knockout formats.
People of Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Chinese, Filipino and European origin took part in the event, which began with a welcome note from Coordinator Lakshmi Prasad Pagadala.
The Tournament was sponsored by Designer Homes, Indian Paradise, Spice Bazaar and Dhaval Lamghare from Harcourts.
After the round-robin based on the skill level, teams were divided into three Grades from which the Winners and Runners for mains and plates were declared.
Grades, Winners and Runners
The Winners from Grade A mains were John Graham and Jason Hsu, Runners were Pavan Kruthinti and Mohammad Rashid. From Grade B Mains, the Winners were Damith and Justin and Runners were Sundeep and Ben Jose. The Grade C mains Winners were Sai Babu and Raghu Ande and Runners were Gopi Sajja and Saranya Duraisamy.
Winners from Grade A plates were Ajesh Jose and Ruby and Runners were Antony and Nigel. From Grade B plates, Winners were Gopinath and Thimiya and Runners were Dinesh Nirudoddi and Nilesh Patel, while Grade C plates Winners were Monty Kumar and Prasad Nayudu and Runners were Suma Yanamadala and Sandesh Codhadu.
Family Carnival
This Tournament included not only the players but also their families. Coming together for cake and a delicious lunch, the celebrations were led by junior players, while their families helped with Christmas celebrations.
The Winners and Runners were presented trophies and gifts by Tournament organiser Rajeswar Peddisetti, who said that Year 2020 started with the George Miller Memorial Badminton League and that the Club had conducted four tournaments.
“For us at Telugu Badminton Club of Canterbury, Badminton is not just a sport but a tool to connect with the community. Despite the tough challenges this year has brought, it was great to see people of different communities and ethnic backgrounds get involved with the Tournaments. We look forward to seeing more in 2021.
