Tamils of Fijian origin have announced the formation of another Sangam to further their goals as a community.
Called, New Zealand Sangam (NZS), the new body distanced itself from existing entities known as ‘Then India Samara Icy (NZ) Sangam Charitable Trust (TISI Trust)’ and ‘Then India Samara Icy (NZ) Sangam Inc (TISI Inc)’.
NZS National President Subaru Mani (Sam) Lingam said that his Sangam would work towards the interest and benefit of the Sangam community in New Zealand.
“NZS is a not-for-profit charitable organisation, registered as an incorporated society with the Companies Office. Its aim is to be a dynamic cultural organisation for the New Zealand Sangam community and a beacon for Sangams worldwide,” he said.
Members and executives of “the previous organisation” were unable to reach fair and realistic outcomes with the TISI Trust and TISI Inc, despite involvement by way of mediation from Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI) Fiji, Mr Lingam added, without giving details.
Mr Lingam said that an interim Executive Committee has been appointed to manage the activities of NZS until its first Annual General Meeting is held.
