Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust, an organisation that has dedicated itself to serving elders in the South Asian communities has announced its annual observance of ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.’
Project Manager Nilima Venkat said that the event will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at 11 am at Mt Roskill War Memorial Hall located at 13, May Road in Mt Roskill, Auckland.
“We will mark this as ‘Kushi’ (Happiness). This Family Fun Day will include a cultural programme. The event is free and open to all,” she said.
She said that although the international day is marked in many parts of the world on June 15, the event is being held a few days earlier in Auckland for the convenience of the members, volunteers and others connected with the Trust.
Changing attitudes
The changing lifestyle, environment and the cultural ethos of New Zealand are stated to be factors that affect the physical and mental fitness of aged parents and grandparents who feel neglected at home. Organisations like Shanti Niwas provide avenues for such elders to meet, play indoor games, interact and amuse themselves.
Ms Venkat said that the Trust aims to help build a society free of abuse.
“Shanti Niwas is a non-profit organisation and has been serving Indian and South Asian seniors and their families for the past 22 years to ensure that they are valued and treasured by society,” she said.
