Stoddard Road sits at the centre of an important growth zone for Auckland and Mt Roskill (Puketapapa). The area is identified for future growth in the Unitary Plan, and is likely to develop into a significant Town Centre.
Mt Roskill is proud to be the most diverse community in Auckland, and we believe that we can work towards an economically successful and culturally tolerant future.
Unfortunately, Auckland Council has neglected this area. For every $1 of investment that the Council puts into other Local Board areas, only 74 cents go into Mt Roskill (Puketapapa).
We have enjoyed watching the area grow and thrive. We have seen new investment come into the area since the State Highway 20 Extension to Maioro Road, with a number of new commercial developments establishing along Stoddard Road.
Increasing investment
This development will increase in the years to come.
We must ensure that a proper Precinct Plan is created for the Stoddard Road area to ensure high quality development that meets community needs in the future.
The area lacks many civic facilities and we should investigate the feasibility of establishing library facilities in the Wesley area and on Stoddard Road so that our young people are encouraged into reading and learning.
We will work with our young people to ensure that they transit into work, education, or training, and do not get drawn into criminal activity.
We believe that plans to build a spur rail line from Avondale to Roskill are realistic and affordable.
The Unitary Plan means that there will be intensification across many parts of Auckland. We must ensure that this is done well in the Stoddard area to ensure a quality living environment for local people.
The current poor cross-town public transport services must be improved so that local people can move about quickly and conveniently.
Michael Wood and Shail Kaushal are contesting for the Puketapapa Local Board in the ensuring local election (October 12, 2013).
