We are at Dorothy Winstone Centre of Auckland Grammar School where a musical evening is in progress.
Organised by Sasi Nambissan and Dr Rita Sasidharan of Aiswarya Entertainments, the packed auditorium is being treated to a wide range of Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi songs.
Biju Narayanan, a trained Carnatic musician, whose repertoire has brought him millions of fans since 1992 has endeared himself to the Malayalam film industry. He is presenting songs that have stood the test of time.
Ashima Manoj, a professional singer and judge, began her presentation with ‘Minsara Kanna,’ an AR Rahman blockbuster from ‘Padayappa’ (1999) to a wide applause.
Yasin Nasir is proving to be a hit as he commenced his innings with a superb rendition of ‘Shankara Naadasareeraparaa,’ a pious number from Shankarabharanam, a 1980 Telugu film that was dubbed into many languages. His ability to execute the Hindustani Classical Bilaval Thaat was amazing.
The evening also belongs to Comedian Ramesh Pisharody, who is keeping the audience in stitches with a combination of everyday observation (that included off-the-cuff remarks in Sasi’s house), the Hema Committee Report that rocked the Malayalam community in 2024 and NASA Astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore who retuned to earth on March 19, 2025 after spending nine unplanned months in space.
The Orchestra that is accompanying the singers from Kerala are Murali Tabla and Percussion), Aneesh (Rhythm Composer), Faizal (Keyboard) Kamal (Guitar) and Francis (Sound Engineer).
