An evening of Indian Dances this weekend

Lovers of Indian classical dances can expect highlights of the Sub-Continent’s heritage at a forthcoming evening of melody, music, colour and costumes.

East Auckland based Migrant Heritage Charitable Trust Inc is organising the event at Freemans Bay Auditorium on May 7 at 6 pm.

Board of Trustees President Prashant Belwalkar said the programme, titled, ‘SAMAA,’ would feature students from popular dance schools in Auckland.

“The event promises to be highly entertaining, showcasing the traditional dance forms from various parts of India. It would be an evening to enjoy the music, dance and motion from foothills of Himalayas to the serenading beauty and grace of the oceans down South,” he said.

Tickets for the show, priced at $10 person, are now on sale.

Mr Belwalkar said the Trust, also known as MigHT-i is a charitable organisation, established to preserve and promote the culture and heritage of India.

“New Zealand has people of Indian origin from all parts of the world. Our Trust aims to provide a platform for these migrants to nurture, sustain and grow our rich cultural heritage. We believe that our past is an indicator of what we, as Indians, are capable of achieving. We will endeavour to pass this fountain of knowledge to the future generation by keeping them enlightened about the rich Indian traditions of arts, culture, sports and religion,” he said.
