It is with pride and satisfaction that I write about Radio Tarana and my life-long friend Robert Khan as the radio station steps into its 15 years of operations.
Time has flown and many developments have occurred since that eventful day – June 15, 1996 when the first words were spoken and carried through the airwaves – 1386 on the AM frequency. It was 5 pm and the station was housed in a different property.
It was a modest beginning for a modest enterprise that Robert and I established. I had always believed that the growing Indian community deserved a quality radio station that it can claim ownership and seek entertainment of lasting value.
I was aware of that a radio station, run professionally with professionals, will succeed. I was therefore extremely pleased when Robert undertook to lease the frequency, establish an enterprise and serve the public. I was confident that his high level of competence and integrity and leadership qualities will be the greatest assets of the Company and that he would nurture it into a major enterprise that would not only surpass our expectations but also compete with the mainstream stations.
I was not wrong. Today, Radio Tarana is a major player in the community, offering more than news, views, entertainment from its well-appointed studios in Auckland City. It is an important partner in major international Bollywood and sports events held in various parts of the world.
The success of a media organisation, be it a radio station or a newspaper always lures others into the industry. Competition is essential in any open market for it ensures the best deal for customers, provided such competition remains healthy and does not get personal and does not pervade into areas of impropriety and dishonesty.
I am extremely gratified that under the able leadership of Robert, Radio Tarana has established and maintained high standards of business ethics, integrity and quality. These factors have been the driving force behind the spectacular performance of the company and its professionally qualified staff.
Robert is known as a man of principles and fair practices – the very ideals that I have followed in my life and career. These principles and practices are non-negotiable. These have become an integral part of Radio Tarana culture.
I have no doubt that the radio station will grow from strength to strength, improve its impressive ratings and continue to make all of us proud. I wish Robert and his team well and I have no doubt that he would enable Radio Tarana to scale loftier heights of fame and glory, in the service of the people of New Zealand.
