The onset of summer usually witnesses eager New Zealander out and about looking for a good fish or two.
As a seafaring nation, many of us have a penchant for fishing and over the years, the number of Indians evincing interest in this hobby has been on the rise.
The Snapper is a hot favourite among those fishing for recreation and the last weekend was no exception.
More than 50 boats comprising the young and the not so young left the Half Moon Bay Marina early in the morning on November 27.
After weeks of rough weather and certainly after a day packed with political activity (November 26 was Election Day in New Zealand), it was time to relax.
Rohit Anand, Arvind Singh and Denis Taa were among the lucky ‘fishermen’ at sea. They had their catch just East of Gannet Rock behind Waihiki Island.
Denis said the group reached their favourite spot at 815 am and began fishing immediately. “The first catch was a snapper weighing 3 kgs, after which there was no stopping. In less than two hours, we got our quota,” he said.
There were fish weighing between 3 kgs and 5 kgs in their boat.
“The pilchard and squid bait combination was on fire and small lures also worked well. Snappers are our most popular recreational and table fish. They can be caught using bait or by jigging small lures,” Denis said.
